Benue: Gov. Alia Unveils Plans for Airport and Export/Import Processing Zone
By Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
The Benue State Government has unveiled plans to construct a modern airport comprising three wings—International, Domestic, and Cargo—as well as an Export/Import Processing Zone within the state.
Governor Hyacinth Alia explained that the project, to be located along the Makurdi–Gboko road, is aimed at easing the challenges faced by the people of Benue.
Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Rev. Frederick Ikyaan, disclosed this on Friday, September 26, 2025, during a meeting with traditional rulers from the affected Local Government Areas (LGAs): Guma, Gboko, Gwer East, and Tarka.
According to him, the airport will be situated on the left side of the Makurdi–Gboko road, immediately after Agasha junction, while the Processing Zone will occupy the right side, requiring about 100 hectares of land. He noted that although the survey of the land has been completed, the Governor felt it necessary to brief the traditional rulers before further steps are taken.
Rev. Ikyaan emphasized that the Governor is keen to see the project commence immediately, adding that careful planning of the area is crucial for smooth development.
Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers, Ter Gwer, Chief Dominic Akpe, and Ter Gboko, Chief Gabriel Shosom, described the initiative as a welcome development that could also help address security concerns, including herdsmen invasions. They expressed appreciation to Governor Alia for the project while requesting fair compensation for residents of the affected communities.
The rulers further commended the Commissioner’s consultative approach and assured him of their cooperation, promising to provide representatives to monitor the project’s progress on their behalf.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Lands and Survey, Matthias Antor, also lauded the traditional rulers for their support and urged them to enlighten their people, stressing that only correspondence endorsed by the chiefs will be recognized by the government.
Our correspondent observed that the Commissioner was accompanied at the meeting by Permanent Secretary Dr. Eunice Ihu; Director-General of the Benue Geographic Information System (BENGIS), Professor Daniel Amine; Special Adviser on Lands and Survey, Surveyor Matthias Antor; and several directors of the ministry, among others.
