BREAKING: Lagos Assembly Speaker Obasa Impeached, Deputy Mojisola Meranda Takes Over
By Iyojo Ameh
The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, over alleged financial and statutory infractions.
Obasa’s impeachment took place during a plenary session on Monday following a motion moved by members of the assembly.
He was accused of mismanaging public funds and engaging in questionable financial dealings, including a controversial project involving the alleged expenditure of N17 billion to fix the assembly gate.
In a swift move, the assembly appointed Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker. Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the Chief Whip of the House.
Mojeed Fatai has now been sworn in as the new Deputy Speaker.
Obasa’s leadership has been marred by a series of controversies, with accusations of financial misconduct and abuse of office over the years. His removal marks a significant shift in the political leadership of the Lagos Assembly.
It is believed that the impeachment signals a move toward accountability within the state’s legislative arm as lawmakers seek to restore public trust in governance.
Details of the next steps for the embattled former Speaker remain unclear as of press time.
