FCT: Wuse Zone 6 Residents Raise Alarm Over Alleged Contaminated Water
Residents of Wuse Zone 6 in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory have expressed concern over alleged contamination of water supplied to their homes.
The complaints, which have grown louder in recent weeks, revolve around reports of unsafe tap water.
One of the residents, Mr. Jimoh Olatunji, told Kapital FM Abuja that he and his daughter fell ill after consuming water from their tap.
“After drinking the water with my daughter, we both suffered from severe stomach upset for days and had to seek medical attention,” Olatunji said.
Similarly, Mr. Uche Uchechukwu described the water as completely unfit for domestic use.
“Each time we open the tap, black and red worms come out, accompanied by a faecal smell. The water cannot be used for cooking, bathing, or even washing,” he lamented.
Chairman of the Wuse Zone 6 Residents Association, Alhaji Ayinde Soaga, voiced displeasure over the development and assured members that the matter would be taken up with the FCT Water Board.
“Yes, by God’s grace, I will go to the FCT Water Board office in Area Three this coming week. I’ll also engage the office responsible for collecting tenement rates to address the issues raised. By our next meeting, I assure you that we will have reached a resolution, Insha Allah,” Soaga pledged.
Responding to the concerns in a telephone interview, the General Manager of the FCT Water Board, Mr. Daniel Salka, maintained that the board supplies clean and safe water across the city, stressing that the situation in Wuse Zone 6 is a localized problem.
“They sent this complaint to me before, and I dispatched a team there twice. Our findings revealed it was a localized issue. We provided advice on corrective measures,” Salka explained.
He noted that in some houses, sewer lines were constructed close to water pipes, which could cause contamination. He stressed that the Board’s general water supply remained clean and safe.
“But in this particular case, I have not received any recent complaints within the last one or two months. Our water does not smell—it’s the same water served to all residents,” he added.
Salka advised affected residents to refrain from drinking the water for now and said a team would be deployed through the area manager to inspect the location once more details are provided.
