FG Refutes Claims of Genocide Against Christians, Reaffirms Commitment to Protect All Nigerians
By Our Correspondent
The Federal Government has strongly condemned and dismissed recent allegations by some international platforms and online influencers suggesting that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the government described such claims as false, baseless, divisive, and despicable.
The Minister explained that portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a targeted campaign against one religious group is a gross misrepresentation of reality. While acknowledging that Nigeria, like many countries, continues to face security threats, including terrorism, Idris stressed that it is misleading and harmful to frame the situation as a deliberate and systematic attack on Christians.
He clarified that terrorist activities in Nigeria are not confined to any single religion or ethnic group, as criminals indiscriminately target anyone who rejects their extremist ideology, regardless of faith.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s resolve, Idris stated that efforts to dismantle terrorist groups and safeguard lives and property remain unwavering. He noted that between May 2023 and February 2025, security forces neutralized more than 13,543 terrorists and criminals, while nearly 10,000 hostages were rescued through military operations across the country.
He further emphasized that the government is committed to protecting every Nigerian, irrespective of religious or ethnic identity, while also collaborating with international partners to combat the global menace of terrorism.
The statement urged international media and commentators to act responsibly by respecting facts rather than spreading ignorance, sensationalism, and divisive rhetoric. Idris called on all stakeholders to support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts in tackling terrorism and criminality in all its forms.
