Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Friday commissioned a newly built 100-bed Mother and Child Specialist Hospital in Gombe State — a major healthcare facility aimed at improving maternal and child survival across the North East region.

The ultra-modern complex, named the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Mother and Child Specialist Hospital, was constructed and fully equipped by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs).

Describing the hospital as “more than just a structure,” the First Lady said it “embodies care, compassion, and commitment to the well-being of women and children.”

“This hospital represents care, compassion, and commitment to the well-being of women and children,” Mrs. Tinubu stated. “It aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritises access to quality healthcare, especially for the most vulnerable in our society.”

She commended Gombe State Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya and his wife Hajiya Asma’u Yahaya for their continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and for naming the hospital in her honour. The First Lady also expressed appreciation to Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, OFR, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, for her leadership and commitment to driving Nigeria’s progress toward achieving the global goals.

In her remarks, Princess Orelope-Adefulire highlighted that the new hospital marks “a significant milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 — Good Health and Well-being for all.”

“Today, we are not merely unveiling a health facility,” she said. “We are reaffirming our shared commitment to providing quality healthcare to the most vulnerable. This hospital is not just a building — it is a fulfilled promise, a sanctuary of care, and a symbol of renewed hope.”

She explained that the facility is equipped with state-of-the-art medical infrastructure, including operating theatres, recovery rooms, laboratories, maternity wards, consultation rooms, and scanning units — all constructed under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on social inclusion, equity, and accelerated national development.

“Every mother deserves a safe delivery. Every child deserves a healthy start to life,” Orelope-Adefulire added. “A baby’s first breath should never be their mother’s last. The moment of birth must be one of joy, not tragedy.”

In a statement by Desmond Utomwen, Special Assistant to the SSAP-SDGs on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communications, Orelope-Adefulire urged the Gombe State Government and local communities to ensure the sustainable use and maintenance of the facility.

“This hospital represents a shared investment in our most valuable asset — our people,” she said. “It directly contributes to the achievement of SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being, as well as other cross-cutting SDGs. Our mission remains to protect mothers and children, uphold family dignity, and build a future where no woman pays the ultimate price for giving life.”

According to the SSAP-SDGs, the Gombe hospital is part of a nationwide network of Mother and Child Hospitals established to reduce maternal and infant mortality, improve access to quality healthcare, and accelerate Nigeria’s progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The hospital is equipped with cutting-edge facilities such as operating theatres, recovery rooms, private and general wards, scanning and consultation rooms, laboratories, and an emergency cart. It stands as a direct instrument for achieving SDG 3 and related goals,” Orelope-Adefulire affirmed.

She reiterated her office’s dedication to implementing impactful projects and partnerships that foster human capital development, social inclusion, and equitable growth nationwide.

“Together, and with God’s help, we will continue to prioritise interventions that positively transform the lives of the poor and vulnerable, ensuring no Nigerian is left behind,” she concluded.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior government officials, traditional rulers, and representatives of women’s groups — reflecting a united commitment to strengthening maternal and child health in Nigeria.
