The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged motorists to remain focused while driving in order to safeguard lives and property on the nation’s highways.

The Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, gave the warning in Abuja during the continuation of the 2025 Ember Months Sensitisation Campaign held at the Zuba Central Motor Park.

Represented by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed said the field sensitisation exercise was aimed at directly engaging the motoring public on the importance of obeying traffic regulations and maintaining safe driving habits, particularly during the peak travel season.

He noted that the campaign message extended beyond drivers to include commuters, who should also caution drivers exhibiting unsafe behaviour on the road.

“If your driver is making a phone call while driving, eating, drinking, or overtaking at the wrong place, please advise him. These are all forms of distracted driving,” he stated.

The Corps Marshal expressed concern that between January and September this year, over 3,000 people had lost their lives in road crashes across the country, stressing the need for heightened caution as vehicular movements increase during the ember months.

Mohammed further emphasised the importance of defensive driving, advising motorists to avoid road rage and not insist on the right of way.

“This is not the season to claim rights on the road. Adopt defensive driving so that we can reduce the rate of carnage on our highways,” he urged.

He also warned against the dangerous act of scooping fuel from fallen tankers, describing it as a life-threatening behaviour.

“Any time a tanker carrying fuel falls, please stay away. Run as fast as your legs can carry you. That is not the time to scoop fuel because when disaster happens, many lives are lost,” he cautioned.

The FRSC Corps Marshal reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to sustained nationwide public enlightenment campaigns to ensure that both drivers and passengers remain safety-conscious during and beyond the ember months.
