The Coordinator of the Global Igbo Leaders (GIL), Nze Amadiebube Mbama, has joined the growing voices calling for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Over the past few months, the demand for Kanu’s release has intensified, following his continued detention for more than four years since his rendition from Kenya. Kanu has been at the forefront of the campaign for the independence of a greater part of Nigeria’s Eastern region.

In a statement made available to newsmen, Mbama expressed deep concern over Kanu’s prolonged incarceration despite a superior court’s order granting him release. He stressed the urgent need to free Kanu to enable him to attend to his deteriorating health.

The GIL Coordinator, a renowned expert in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing, lamented that Kanu’s case appears to have shifted from prosecution to persecution, as court rulings granting him bail have been consistently ignored by the government.

According to Mbama, releasing Kanu and halting his trial would open the door for constructive dialogue and a peaceful resolution of longstanding issues in the Southeast region.

He therefore appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to exercise the discretion of his office and order Kanu’s release, expressing optimism that doing so would serve as a healing balm to restore peace in the Southeast and revitalize economic activities across the country.

Mbama further emphasized that Kanu’s release would create an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue to address the various challenges confronting the Southeast region.
