According to a report by The PUNCH on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Anambra State Police Command has arrested 24-year-old Somtochukwu Nwafor in connection with the gruesome murder and dismemberment of a pregnant nurse whose remains were found dumped in a soakaway pit in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area. The arrest, made on July 25, 2025, followed a swift response by the police, aided by members of the Umueri village who raised the alarm after news of the crime rattled the community.
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest and revealed in a statement that Nwafor confessed during interrogation. She admitted to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who is currently on the run. According to her statement, Elobisi lured the nurse under the guise of seeking medical attention, only to kill and mutilate her. Nwafor further disclosed that she was invited afterward to clean up the blood and assist in selling the victim’s body parts to “evil native doctors” operating within the region—exposing a chilling network of illegal human organ trade.
Acting on the confession, operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department stormed the shrine of a native doctor, identified as Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, in Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike. There, police discovered several bags containing suspected human remains, fueling fears of a widespread ritual killing syndicate. The shrine has since been sealed, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend Elobisi, the native doctor, and other suspects connected to the heinous crime.
The statement read:
“The Anambra State Police Command, leveraging the support of the Umueri village and Ogbunike community, arrested one female suspect, Somtochukwu Nwafor, aged 24, on July 25, 2025. The arrest is linked to the brutal killing of a pregnant nurse whose mutilated remains were recently found in a soakaway pit in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being the girlfriend of the principal suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, currently at large. She admitted being called to clean up the blood after the killing and revealed how they sold the victim’s body parts to various evil native doctors in the region.”
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the act, describing it as a vile assault on human dignity and morality. He urged anyone with relevant information to come forward, assuring them of full protection. The case has sparked fresh outrage among residents, especially amid a disturbing increase in ritual-related killings in the South-East, prompting intensified crackdowns on ritual shrines and human trafficking networks.
