No fewer than 300 psychologists, scholars, and experts from 22 African countries will converge on Abuja to explore opportunities in psychology education aimed at addressing developmental challenges across the continent.

A Professor of Clinical Psychology at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Andrew Zamani, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja. He explained that the Pan African Psychology Union chose Nigeria as the host of this year’s conference to build the capacity of young Nigerians in responding to trauma-related challenges.

Professor Zamani emphasized the need for programs that would enhance cross-border mental health services for victims of violence, conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and youth development — all geared towards meeting Africa’s unique needs.

According to him, the outcome of the Pan African Psychology Union meeting in Nigeria would support governments, civil society organizations, and well-meaning individuals in promoting poverty reduction, quality healthcare, food security, and social services that improve the quality of life across the continent.

“The conference will bring together psychology lecturers and scholars to examine challenges in psychology education and explore possibilities for harmonizing the psychology curriculum to improve training standards in our universities,” he said.
