Nigerian-Finnish Association President, Applauds Finland Over Ekpa’s Conviction
Senator Gbenga Daniel, President of the Nigerian-Finnish Association, has lauded the conviction of Simon Ekpa by a Finnish court, describing it as a landmark victory for international justice.
He commended the Finnish government and the Päijät-Häme District Court for what he called their “resolute and judicious” judgment, which sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison on terrorism-related charges.
Ekpa was found guilty of participating in a terrorist organisation and inciting violence, actions that fuelled deadly sit-at-home orders in South-Eastern Nigeria. Senator Daniel described the ruling as a “watershed moment,” stressing that it sends a “powerful message that the tentacles of terrorism will be severed by the collective will of civilised nations.”
According to him, the judgment signifies a major step forward in Nigeria-Finland relations, moving beyond diplomacy to “tangible, impactful cooperation.” He highlighted this solidarity as the “cornerstone of mutual trust” and a driver for enhanced collaboration in justice and security.
The Senator further noted that the decision upholds Nigeria’s sovereignty and delivers an “unequivocal message” to those attempting to undermine the country’s territorial integrity from abroad. He reiterated that Nigeria’s unity is “non-negotiable,” applauding the court for condemning terrorism as a method, not a cause.
Senator Daniel expressed his “deepest gratitude” to the Finnish authorities, stating that their commitment to due process offers “solace to the victims of violence in Nigeria” while reinforcing the principles of international law.
