President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed the Chief Justice of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo, from office with immediate effect.

The announcement, made on Monday, September 1, 2025, was carried out in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the President to act on the recommendations of a committee constituted under Article 146(6).

This development stemmed from a petition filed by a Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Ofori, which led to the establishment of an investigative committee. After a thorough review, the committee found Justice Torkonoo guilty of stated misbehaviour as outlined in Article 146(1) and subsequently recommended her removal.

Acting on the committee’s findings, President Mahama directed her dismissal in strict compliance with constitutional provisions.

The decision was formally communicated through a statement issued by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who stressed that the action followed due process.

Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, appointed Chief Justice in 2023, is now the latest head of the Judiciary to leave office via the constitutional impeachment process.
