Sudan Crush Super Eagles B 4-0, End Nigeria’s CHAN Hopes
The Super Eagles’ campaign in the African Nations Championship has ended in disappointment after a crushing 4-0 defeat to Sudan on Tuesday night.
The result, the team’s most humiliating loss in the tournament so far, came as the group stage nears its conclusion.
At the start, there was little sign of the looming disaster. Nigeria dictated the early play and even thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Anthony Ijoma, breaking from defence to attack, latched onto a floated pass near the halfway line and found the net. However, VAR ruled the goal out for a marginal offside.
Almost immediately afterwards, disaster struck. Nigerian defender Leonard Ngenge, in an attempt to head away a shot from Sudan’s Abdel Yagoub, inadvertently directed the ball into his own net.
Things got worse just before halftime when a ball struck Ngenge’s outstretched hand inside the box, leading to a penalty that Walieldin Khdir converted to double Sudan’s lead.
Ten minutes after the restart, Abdel Yagoub fired in his first of the night with a left-footed strike, making it 3-0. He later wrapped up the emphatic victory in the 62nd minute with his second goal, sealing Sudan’s position at the top of the group.
Nigeria’s final group game against Congo will now be nothing more than a formality.
