Ahead of the 2027 General Elections, Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) said the commission is set to resume a nationwide Continuous Voters Registration (CVR), exercise.

Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Benue State, Professor Samuel Egwu, who disclosed this on Monday while briefing newsmen in his office in Makurdi, said the exercise will begin from August 18, 2025, covering the 36 States of the Federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Professor Egwu explained that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for the continuous voter registration to ensure that voter register is inclusive to accommodate those that have attained 18 years after the previous election.

He said the commission will commence with an online registration exercise from August 18, 2025 to enable interested individuals doing online registration to visit the INEC website: http://cvr.inecnigeria.org.

According to him “This is preparatory to in-person registration. In-person registration in all INEC area offices nationwide and other designated centers will start from August 25 2025 between 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day from Monday to Friday.”

Egwu said the forthcoming CRV will address inclusion of fresh persons who are not in the existing register as a result of turning 18 after the 2023 general election and were not able to register before because they were not in the country, they were in prison or were not interested.

He said it will also address Persons is seeking card replacement due to lost voter’s card as a result of crisis, robbery or carelessness and damage to the card for a number of reasons, correction on the card, deliberate change or inclusion of any other parameters or those seeking intra and inter state transfer or from one ward to another or one polling unit to another.”

The Commission’s boss who emphasized that the exercise is free of charge urged citizens to report any INEC official seeking any form of gratification to be attended to.

He explained further that the exercise, for now, would take place at the commissions area offices in the local government areas and will remain so until additional designation points are announced by the commission.

Egwu stated that the commission takes the CVR process serious saying it is cardinal to the success of the entire electoral process since the power to exercise one’s franchise lies in being registered to vote.
