By David Odama
The House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services has commenced an oversight visit to Nasarawa State as part of its ongoing mandate to review progress toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across the country.
Led by its chairman, Gwamna Magaji, the Committee began its inspection at the Mararaban Akunza Primary Healthcare Centre under the guidance of the Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NAPHDA), Dr.
Usman Iskilu Saleh.During the exercise, the lawmakers disclosed their intention to verify the release and utilization of funds allocated under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF). They will also assess the state’s counterpart contributions and inspect select Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).
The visit, according to the Committee, will place strong emphasis on transparency in health spending, the functionality of healthcare infrastructure, and key public health indicators such as zero-dose vaccination rates, which measure immunization coverage in underserved communities.
Arriving in Nasarawa on Friday, the Committee is scheduled to hold a formal meeting with the Honourable Commissioner for Health today, Friday, August 29, and will also pay a courtesy visit to Governor Abdullahi Sule.
The oversight mission forms part of a broader national initiative by the legislature to ensure accountability, strengthen healthcare delivery, and close persistent gaps in Nigeria’s public health system.
Magaji reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to supporting states in delivering quality and accessible healthcare services to Nigerians.
