The President of the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association (ROSOWA), Dr. Nafisat Shehu-Mohammed, has appealed to motorists to make road safety a top priority.

She described the condition of road traffic crash victims at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, as “traumatising.

Dr.

Shehu-Mohammed made the appeal during a visit by ROSOWA members to road accident victims at the facility, stressing that proper safety practices and adherence to road safety rules are essential to reducing avoidable crashes.

She explained that the visit aimed to honour those who have lost their lives, support survivors, and push for renewed efforts to reduce injuries and fatalities, as part of activities marking the 2025 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, observed globally every third Sunday of November.

According to her, this year’s theme, “Remember, Support, Act,” is appropriate and underscores the need for greater commitment to safe driving nationwide.

“It is traumatising to be here and see many crash victims, some unconscious and some beyond recognition,” she said.

She cautioned motorists against speeding, drunk driving, and distractions while driving, urging them to always inspect their vehicles before any trip.

During the visit, Dr. Shehu-Mohammed announced that ROSOWA would assume responsibility for the medical care and welfare of Mrs. Mary, an unconscious hit-and-run victim who has been at the hospital for four weeks without any family support, for the next 30 days.

She added that the association would also donate ₦50,000 and provide relief materials to another female victim whose leg was amputated after a road crash.

A consultant neurosurgeon and Head of the Surgical Emergency Unit at FMC, Dr. Timothy Samaila, commended ROSOWA for their compassion, noting that their visit demonstrated a genuine commitment to saving lives.

He emphasized that such advocacy is crucial to promoting prevention, which remains the most effective approach to reducing trauma cases.

Items donated by the association included wheelchairs, crutches, sanitary pads, diapers, cotton wool, bandages, cash, and other relief supplies.
