Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the immediate closure of the Onitsha Main Market for seven days over continued non-compliance with the state government’s directive against the controversial Monday sit-at-home order.
The action followed repeated defiance by traders in the market who failed to open for business on Mondays, despite government warnings to ignore the sit-at-home directive imposed by non-state actors.

Governor Soludo had earlier cautioned traders against shutting down markets on Mondays and also extended the warning to civil servants who stay away from work on the same day in the name of sit-at-home.
Speaking during a visit to the market, the governor warned that if traders fail to resume business on Mondays after the expiration of the one-week shutdown, the market would be closed for an additional one month.
He explained that the decision to shut the market was necessary to protect law-abiding citizens and to reinforce the authority of the state, stressing that the government would not allow a few individuals to undermine public safety or disregard official directives aimed at restoring normalcy.
Following the order, security personnel, including officers of the police and the army, were immediately deployed to seal the market gates and ensure full compliance with the directive.
