Military releases names of alleged coup plotters amid health concerns in detention
Following the confirmation of an alleged coup attempt to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as contained in a report submitted to him on Sunday by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), the Defence Headquarters has confirmed the detention of 16 suspects who are to face trial before a military court-martial.
The 16 detainees have been accused of acts of indiscipline and violations of service regulations within the Armed Forces.
They have reportedly been in detention since last year, with sources close to the matter expressing concern over the deteriorating health conditions of some of the officers.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed that the investigative panel had concluded its assignment and found that several of the officers have cases to answer.
According to him, the affected officers will now be subjected to a military court-martial in accordance with established procedures and existing regulations.
Major General Uba stated that the conduct of the indicted officers was “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
