A leadership dispute is intensifying within the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), prompting more than 200 delegates to convene in Abuja on Wednesday for an emergency meeting.

The gathering follows controversy over the disqualification of some candidates during the association’s Annual Delegates Meeting (ADM) elections, a development that has generated concern among stakeholders.

In a statement released in Lokoja, the Chairman of the State Chairmen of the association, Dr. Oreyemi Ifedayo, explained that the emergency meeting became necessary after repeated attempts to resolve the issue failed.
He said the decision to disqualify candidates has been widely rejected by state chairmen, several internal groups, and the Committee of Past Presidents, all of whom have urged NMA President Dr. Bala Audu to reverse the action.
Ifedayo warned that failure to address the situation could destabilize the association.
According to him, the Committee of Past Presidents has already met and resolved that the disqualifications should be reversed to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all contestants.
He added that despite these interventions, the association’s president has not acted on the recommendations, raising fears of a deepening crisis.
Ifedayo further stated that the emergency meeting scheduled for April 22 will allow delegates to deliberate on the matter and seek ways to restore peace and stability within the NMA.
He confirmed that preparations for the meeting have been completed, with more than 200 delegates already verified to attend.
