The House of Representatives has endorsed the candidacy of Nigerian-born United Kingdom nominee, Professor Dapo Akande, for a seat on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term.

The endorsement was given by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, during a courtesy visit by Professor Akande and officials of the British High Commission to the National Assembly in Abuja.

Kalu described the nominee as a distinguished legal scholar with strong international credentials, noting that his candidacy reflects Nigeria’s intellectual capacity and influence on the global stage.
The Deputy Speaker stated that Professor Akande’s nomination would enhance Nigeria’s representation in international judicial institutions and called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to provide full diplomatic support for the campaign.
Speaking during the visit, Professor Akande said he was in Nigeria to seek the support of key stakeholders for his election bid. He pledged to contribute to the development of international law and the promotion of global justice if elected to the court.
