Deputy Senate President Raises the Bar with Record Bill Sponsorship

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has sponsored a total of 42 bills within three years, spanning June 13, 2023, to June 13, 2026, according to records from the Senate.


Representing Kano North Senatorial District, Senator Barau has emerged as the most active lawmaker in the 10th Senate in terms of private member bill sponsorship.

Following the proclamation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the 10th National Assembly was inaugurated on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. The Assembly marked its third anniversary on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
According to The Parliamentarian Magazine, published by the media office of the Deputy President of the Senate to commemorate the third anniversary of the 10th Senate, five of the 42 bills sponsored by Senator Barau have already been passed into law.
The publication chronicles the legislative and parliamentary activities of the Deputy Senate President, including his contributions through bill sponsorship.
A breakdown of the bills shows that Senator Barau sponsored 13 bills in 2023, nine in 2024, 17 in 2025, and three in 2026.
The five bills that have been passed include the North West Development Commission Bill, National Identity Management Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment) Bill, Federal Medical Centre, Gwarzo, Kano State (Establishment) Bill, and the Federal University of Science and Technology Kabo (Establishment) Bill.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, noted that the bills cut across several sectors, including education, industry, the economy, constitutional amendment, governance, and national development.
According to him, sponsoring 42 bills within three years is a remarkable legislative achievement.
He said Senator Barau, popularly known as “Maliya,” has consistently distinguished himself through outstanding performance and a commitment to raising standards in public service.
Mudashir further stated that the Deputy Senate President has maintained this legislative record while also supporting the Senate President in providing leadership for the Senate.
He added that Senator Barau, who serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, has also played a significant role in the leadership and activities of the regional legislative body.
