Former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Assumes Duty as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), , has arrived in Doha to begin his diplomatic assignment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the State of Qatar.

Yakubu, who concluded his tenure as Nigeria’s electoral chief in October 2025 after becoming the first INEC chairman to serve two terms, was received at Hamad International Airport on Wednesday by Ambassador Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, Director of the Protocol Department at Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His arrival marked the formal commencement of his ambassadorial duties following his appointment by President .

The former INEC chairman was among the ambassadorial nominees whose names were forwarded to the Senate by President Tinubu in November 2025 and subsequently confirmed by the upper legislative chamber. In March 2026, the President approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate, assigning Yakubu to Qatar.

In a show of diplomatic goodwill, 13 African ambassadors based in Doha joined Qatari officials in welcoming the Nigerian envoy. Also present at the reception were Dr. Philip Mshelbila, Secretary-General of the , and Michael Ndukaihe Ihekwaba, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Qatar.

Analysts have described Yakubu’s posting as strategically important, given the expanding diplomatic and economic relations between Nigeria and Qatar.

Nigeria and Qatar established formal diplomatic ties in 2010 and opened embassies in Abuja and Doha three years later. Bilateral relations have strengthened steadily through high-level engagements, including visits by former President to Qatar in 2016 and Qatar’s Emir, , to Nigeria in 2019.

The relationship gained further momentum following President Tinubu’s official visit to Qatar in 2024, during which both countries signed several agreements and memoranda of understanding aimed at boosting economic cooperation and investment.

As ambassador, Yakubu is expected to play a central role in strengthening collaboration between both countries, particularly in the energy sector where Qatar remains one of the world’s leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), while Nigeria possesses some of Africa’s largest natural gas reserves.

Observers say one of his immediate priorities will be attracting Qatari investment and technical expertise to support Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative and broader energy development agenda.

Beyond energy, the new envoy is also expected to promote Nigeria’s economic reforms and attract foreign direct investment into critical sectors, including agriculture, aviation, real estate, technology and digital infrastructure.

Particular attention is expected to focus on engagement with the Qatar Investment Authority, one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, which manages assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars globally.

Yakubu will also oversee efforts to strengthen consular services for Nigerians living and working in Qatar and the wider Gulf region. Working with diaspora organisations, he is expected to champion the welfare of Nigerian professionals and workers while exploring avenues for channeling diaspora resources into productive investments back home.

His appointment comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to deepen its diplomatic footprint in the Gulf region and expand economic partnerships beyond its traditional allies in Europe and North America.
