NiMet Partners AKADEMIYA2063 to Deploy AI for Climate Forecasting, Food Security

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AKADEMIYA2063 to strengthen the use of artificial intelligence (AI), climate data analytics and weather information services to boost climate resilience, agricultural productivity and food security in Nigeria.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Abuja by NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, and AKADEMIYA2063’s Managing Director, Dr. Debisi Araba, alongside the organisation’s Director of Data Intelligence and Governance, Dr. Racine Ly.
Under the partnership, both organisations will collaborate on applying artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal weather forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making to improve climate services and agricultural planning.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the collaboration reflects NiMet’s commitment to embracing digital innovation and emerging technologies to improve weather forecasting and climate services.
He disclosed that the agency has already established an AI Research Team to explore the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in meteorological forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency, adding that the partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 would further accelerate those efforts.
“This partnership represents another step in positioning NiMet for the future through innovation and technology-driven solutions,” he said.
On his part, Dr. Araba described the agreement as a significant milestone in strengthening Africa’s capacity for data-driven research, analytics and evidence-based policymaking.
He said combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise in data intelligence with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities would provide practical solutions to address climate change, enhance food security and promote sustainable development across Nigeria.
To implement the agreement, the two organisations will establish a Joint Technical Committee that will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority areas for collaboration, coordinate activities and develop joint initiatives focused on climate services, AI research, innovation and sustainable development.
The partnership is expected to enhance Nigeria’s climate information systems and support farmers, policymakers and other stakeholders with more accurate weather forecasts and climate intelligence for improved planning and disaster preparedness.
