Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), fondly known as IBB, on his 85th birthday.

In a heartfelt tribute, Dogara described Babangida as “a statesman of uncommon vision whose leadership helped shape the destiny of Nigeria.
” He said Babangida’s years in power were characterised by bold reforms, infrastructural expansion and the creation of new states, which gave voice and identity to millions of Nigerians.
Born on August 17, 1941, Babangida rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army before becoming Head of State in 1985. His eight-year tenure remains one of the defining periods in Nigeria’s political and economic history. During his administration, he introduced far-reaching economic reforms, strengthened the federal structure through state creation and invested in infrastructure projects that continue to serve the country decades later.
Dogara noted that Babangida’s foresight in establishing institutions and agencies has contributed to his enduring legacy. He particularly highlighted his role in expanding Nigeria’s federation, promoting equity and representation across diverse regions, and laying foundations upon which successive governments have built.
Beyond his years in office, Dogara commended Babangida for his continued role as an elder statesman. He said that even in retirement at his Minna Hilltop residence, the former military president continues to offer wise counsel to successive governments and inspire younger generations through his humility, patriotism and resilience.
He prayed for Babangida’s continued health, strength and grace, describing his life as a testimony of service to God and country.
As Nigerians mark his 85 years, Babangida’s story remains one of military distinction, political leadership and enduring influence in Nigeria’s journey toward unity and progress. His legacy, Dogara noted, continues to remind the nation of the importance of vision, courage and commitment to the common good.
