TCN Commissions 100MVA Transformer, Raises Alausa Substation Capacity to 205MVA
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a newly installed 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at the Alausa Transmission Substation, Lagos, in a major boost to electricity transmission capacity in the area.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, said the project would significantly strengthen the substation’s capacity to meet growing electricity demand while improving the reliability of bulk power supply to communities within Alausa and its environs.

The newly commissioned transformer replaces the existing 1x30MVA, 132/33kV transformer, increasing the substation’s capacity by 70MVA and raising its total capacity from 135MVA to 205MVA.
Abdulaziz, who spoke at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, said the project was part of the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and expand the capacity of the national grid.
According to him, the project was executed by Shanghai Electric Ltd under a World Bank-funded initiative which commenced in January 2021.
He described the completion of the project as a demonstration of TCN’s commitment to delivering critical transmission infrastructure despite challenges encountered during implementation.

Upon energisation, the transformer is expected to provide more stable and reliable electricity to at least 70,000 residents in Alausa and surrounding communities through the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC).
The TCN chief executive explained that the impact of the project would extend beyond the immediate beneficiaries, noting that the increased capacity would enable the transmission company to wheel more bulk electricity to distribution load centres.
He said the upgrade would also contribute to improved grid stability and facilitate the delivery of more bulk power to distribution companies for onward supply to electricity consumers within their franchise areas.
«“It is a clear demonstration that TCN remains resolute in its mandate of building and sustaining a robust transmission network, capable of transporting Nigeria’s growing power needs to various distribution load centres nationwide,” Abdulaziz said.»
The TCN boss linked the project to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while commending the Minister of Power for what he described as visionary leadership and continued commitment to the systematic development of Nigeria’s power sector.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Power, the World Bank, the Lagos State Government, Shanghai Electric Ltd, TCN engineers, contractors and other stakeholders whose contributions facilitated the completion of the project.
Abdulaziz said the commissioning represented another milestone in TCN’s efforts to expand and modernise Nigeria’s transmission network and create greater capacity for the movement of electricity from generation sources to distribution load centres across the country.
He reaffirmed TCN’s determination to continue investing in critical transmission infrastructure as part of efforts to support a more stable and reliable electricity supply nationwide.
