Kangimi Dam Warning: Residents Told to Stay Alert
Residents of Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory have been advised to remain vigilant and relocate to safer areas following warnings that the Kangimi Dam in Kaduna State could pose a flooding threat if it collapses.
The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Abdullahi Arah, issued the warning, saying communities in six local government areas of Niger State, parts of Kwara State, Bwari and other parts of the FCT could be affected.
Arah said reports from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, indicated that the Kangimi Dam in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State had developed a visible crack, raising concerns over a possible collapse.
According to him, the dam has a storage capacity of 59.2 million cubic metres of water, and its failure could trigger flooding on a scale comparable to the recent disasters recorded in Maiduguri and Mokwa.
He added that emergency agencies were intensifying sensitisation efforts and urged residents in vulnerable communities to remain alert and move to higher ground to prevent loss of lives and property.
