Nigeria @ 66: FG Announces October 1 Public Holiday
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
Congratulating Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, Tunji-Ojo called on citizens to mark the occasion by promoting national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
He stressed that peace and stability remain essential for sustainable national development and urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the country’s founding fathers.
According to the minister, Nigerians should remain optimistic about the nation’s future despite existing challenges.
“As we celebrate 66th years of our independence, we should always remember that there is hope for our country and our diversity is our strength, and our collective determination remains the foundation upon which a stronger and more prosperous nation will be built,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to improving security and public safety across the country.
He said ongoing efforts were focused on creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their aspirations with confidence.
The minister further noted that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda would continue to drive policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians and fostering national development.
He urged citizens to use the Independence Day celebration as an opportunity to renew their commitment to unity, peace and nation-building.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, making this year’s celebration the country’s 66th anniversary of nationhood.
