Road Mgt : 5000 Commercial Drivers Receive Free Eye Glasses From FRSC

Not less than Five Thousand commercial drivers, Tricycle and motorcycle Operators at Jabi Central Park Abuja are to receive free eye test, glasses and other medications to enhance their visuals.

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC Mallam Shehu Mohammed while speaking during a medical outreach to mark this year’s World Sight Day in Abuja said the initiative was part of the United Nations Decade of Action on road safety which focuses on Safer Road Users.

Represented by the Assistant Corps Marshal incharge of Special Duties and External Relations Ibrahim Mbazama, the Corps Marshal maintained that the Corps recognised that road safety is not only about vehicles and roads; but also about the health, alertness and wellbeing of the people who use the roads.

According to the FRSC Boss, a driver whose health is compromised may have impaired vision, fatigue, poor concentration or delayed response, all of which can increase the risk of road traffic crashes.

He commended the Commission’s partner, “BATMED” stressing that the medical outreach will provide an opportunity to promote preventive healthcare, early detection of health challenges and responsible health practices, particularly among motorists and other road users.

“We sincerely appreciate the management of BATMED for partnering with the Corps to bring this valuable service closer to the people.
This collaboration further demonstrates what can be achieved when government institutions, civil society organisations, healthcare professionals and communities work together for public interest.”

Mallam Shehu Mohammed therefore urged all motorists to make their health a priority.

“Do not drive when sick, excessively tired, emotionally distressed or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Ensure regular medical checks, adequate rest, good vision and general physical fitness before embarking on long journeys.

The Director General of BATMED, Mr. Ojeje Aminu-Onimisi said the medical outreach reflects the humanitarian vision of President Bola Tinubu in advancing the wellbeing of youths practical intervention and inclusive Healthcare.

According to him, the theme : See Clearly, Drive Safely captured the urgency of the initiative saying impaired vision can endanger drivers, passengers and every road user.

“By driving safely, we strengthen our community and build a stronger Nigeria.”

He urged motorists to undergo proper eye examination and act promptly on professional medical advice.
