Africa’s richest man and industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is stepping down as Chairman of the Board of Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc after two decades at the helm.

His retirement will take effect from June 16, 2025, according to a corporate disclosure signed by the company secretary, Temitope Hassan, on Wednesday.

Dangote, who assumed leadership of the board in 2005, is widely credited with transforming Dangote Sugar into a dominant force in Nigeria’s sugar industry. Under his leadership, the company expanded its operations significantly and made strategic investments in local sugar production.

“In line with the principles of good corporate governance and succession planning, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc hereby announces the retirement of our esteemed Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company, Alhaji Aliko Dangote (GCON), effective June 16, 2025,” the statement read.

The company highlighted Dangote’s role in championing its Backward Integration Projects in Adamawa, Taraba, and Nasarawa States—initiatives aimed at boosting local sugar production and reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imports.

In a move to ensure a smooth transition, the Board has announced the appointment of Independent Non-Executive Director, Mr. Arnold Ekpe, as the incoming chairman.

Ekpe, a veteran banker and former Group CEO of Ecobank, brings with him decades of leadership and boardroom experience across various sectors.

“We welcome Mr. Ekpe to his new role and look forward to the next chapter in our company’s journey under his leadership. We also express our deep appreciation to Alhaji Aliko Dangote for his years of exemplary service and unwavering commitment to excellence,” the company stated.

Dangote Sugar Refinery is one of Nigeria’s leading integrated sugar producers and plays a strategic role in the nation’s industrial development plan.
