Bill to establish Federal University of Education in Gumel, Jigawa state passed second reading
A bill to establish Federal University of Education in Gumel , Jigawa state has passed second reading in the Senate.
The bill which was passed during plenary in Abuja, was sponsored by
Senator Hussaini Babangida Uba, representing Jigawa North West Senatorial District.
The bill, which seeks to upgrade the existing Jigawa State College of Education in Gumel into a Federal University of Education, was read for the first time on Monday, 6th November 2023. During his presentation, Senator Uba stressed that the establishment of the university is a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s teacher education system and address the shortage of qualified educators across the country.
“The development of a sound and robust educational system hinges on the availability of well-trained teachers, This university will serve as a hub for producing professional educators equipped with the skills to meet Nigeria’s educational needs”Senator Uba noted.
He outlined the core objectives of the proposed institution, including the advancement of learning without discrimination, development of academic and professional programmes, production of socially mature education professionals, and collaboration with other institutions for research and innovation in education.
Senator Uba told his colleagues that the establishment of the university would not pose any financial burden on the Federal Government, as the Jigawa State Government has already agreed to transfer the existing infrastructure of the College of Education Gumel for the university’s use.
“This initiative will not only transform educational development in Jigawa State but also contribute significantly to national capacity building in the education sector,I respectfully seek the support of my distinguished colleagues for the speedy passage of this important bill”the Senator stressed.
The bill has been referred to relevant Senate committees for further legislative inputs
