BREAKING: Court Orders Malami, Wife, Son to Remain in Custody Until January 7
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Friday fixed January 7 for its ruling on the bail applications filed by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN, his wife, Bashir Asabe, and his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz.
Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the matter after defence counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, and counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ekele Iheanacho, SAN, adopted their written addresses and advanced oral arguments before the court.
The defendants are standing trial in a charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, in which the EFCC listed Malami, his wife and son as the first, second and third defendants, respectively, over alleged money laundering offences.
According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants engaged in several suspicious financial transactions and allegedly attempted to conceal the illicit origin of billions of naira through multiple bank accounts and property acquisitions in Abuja, Kano and Kebbi states.
The EFCC stated that the alleged offences were committed between 2015 and 2025, a period that covers Malami’s tenure as Attorney-General of the Federation under the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The commission further alleged that Malami, his wife and son conspired to disguise the source of funds, indirectly acquire properties and retain sums they allegedly knew were proceeds of unlawful activities. The offences, according to the EFCC, contravene provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.
Ruling on the bail applications has been adjourned to January 7, pending the court’s decision.
