The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has disclosed that it deregistered over 400,000 companies in 2025 due to inactivity and practices considered detrimental to the smooth functioning of the nation’s economy.
The Registrar-General of the Commission, Alhaji Hussaini Magaji, made this known in Abuja during a commemorative walk to mark the CAC’s 35th anniversary.

According to Alhaji Magaji, the decision to deregister the affected companies was taken to strengthen investor confidence and ensure the maintenance of credible, accurate, and reliable records of active companies operating in Nigeria.
He further revealed that the Commission has established a Beneficial Ownership Register, which has since been launched and fully operationalised, to enable the CAC to maintain comprehensive records of individuals behind registered companies.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at promoting transparency and accountability while safeguarding the business environment against fraudulent practices.
Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to improving the ease of doing business in the country, the Registrar-General disclosed that CAC is collaborating with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) to register 250,000 small businesses. He noted that the initiative forms part of the Commission’s intervention to support small and medium enterprises, stimulate sectoral growth, and accelerate national economic development.
On staff welfare, Alhaji Magaji announced plans to establish a hospital that will provide healthcare services for both serving and retired staff of the Commission. He added that car loan and housing loan schemes have already been put in place to enhance staff welfare and boost productivity.
While calling for the continued support of staff and management, the Registrar-General also appealed for stronger collaboration with the media and other stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of the Commission’s mandate.
He concluded by stating that several other activities have been lined up as part of events to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Corporate Affairs Commission.
