Christmas Season: Nigerian Baptist Convention Supports Widows, Distributes Food Items
In the spirit of Christmas, more than one hundred widows from the Northern Region have received free food items and empowerment materials from the Social Ministries Department of the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
At the event held at First Baptist Church, Garki, Abuja, the Minister in charge of Unity Baptist Church, Utako, Reverend Linus Thomas, described the initiative as commendable and emphasized the need for religious bodies to continue uplifting vulnerable and less privileged groups in society.
Reverend Thomas, who served as Guest Speaker, expressed concern over the hardships faced by many widows and urged all tiers of government to prioritize their needs and aspirations. He encouraged the beneficiaries to trust in God and avoid actions that could tarnish their reputation or hinder their spiritual growth.
In their goodwill messages, D’Anna Shotts and Angel Oswood from the International Mission Board applauded the Social Ministries Department for its annual end-of-year outreach across the country. They noted that the initiative has consistently provided widows and widowers with a sense of belonging within the Christian community and pledged the Board’s continued support.
Earlier, the Director of the Social Ministries Department, Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Aderounmu, stated that the gesture was aimed at easing the burdens of widows during the festive season. She urged them to keep praying for a better and more prosperous Nigeria.
Rev. Dr. Aderounmu also announced that similar programmes would hold for widows in the Western Zone at Hebron Baptist Centre, Lasokun, Idi Isin, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, December 11th, 2025, at 10 a.m., and in the Eastern Zone at First Baptist Church, Boji-Boji, Agbor, Delta State, on Saturday, December 13th, 2025, also at 10 a.m. She added that the aim is to put smiles on their faces and give them a sense of belonging during the Christmas season.
Wishing the widows a Merry Christmas in advance, she reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to implementing programmes that promote self-reliance among widows and other vulnerable groups, in line with the doctrine of the Nigerian Baptist Convention.
Some of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Convention for consistently supporting them in times of need and urged other religious organizations to emulate the Social Ministries Department in empowering widows and addressing their challenges.
Highlights of the event included free medical check-ups, health talks, testimonies, and prayers for the Nigerian Baptist Convention, the nation, and its leadership.
