The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has urged women across the country to embrace early cancer screening, warning that ignorance and late detection remain major contributors to preventable deaths among Nigerian women.

This message was delivered during NAWOJ FCT’s June 2025 Congress held in Abuja, which was presided over by Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang. The meeting also featured far-reaching discussions on national issues including women’s inclusion, security, welfare, and internal matters concerning the association.

Speaking at the Congress, Dr. Tessy Ahmadu, a Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist with the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, commended NAWOJ members for participating in the free cancer screening initiative held during the March 2025 International Women’s Day celebration.

Dr. Ahmadu highlighted that journalists were prioritized in the outreach because of their influence in shaping public narratives and encouraging behavioral change.

“Cancer is not a death sentence,” she said. “Early detection is our best weapon. Journalists must help debunk myths, be they cultural, religious, or financial that prevent women from seeking life-saving screenings.”

She revealed that over 100 members were screened using the Thermalytix method and urged members to provide feedback that could help in pushing for its official adoption in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

In its review of national developments, the Congress applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for honoring distinguished Nigerians during the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations but expressed disappointment at the glaring underrepresentation of women—only three made the list of awardees.

The association also commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for recent improvements in water supply across Abuja but condemned the worsening security situation, rising cost of living, poor electricity supply, and frequent attacks by criminal elements.

Particularly alarming to members was the recent armed robbery attack on NAWOJ FCT Vice Chairperson, Comrade Bolanle Ukpevo, who was ambushed while returning from work in Abuja.

“We will not remain silent as our lives and livelihoods are threatened daily,” said Chairperson Ikpang. “Journalists must rise and report truth to power without fear or favor.”

The Congress also adopted a number of resolutions to strengthen internal unity and promote member welfare:

1. Membership Mobilization – A chapel visitation committee will be formed to encourage increased attendance and engagement at NAWOJ functions.

2. Condolence Protocols – A proactive team will now physically visit bereaved members to show support, beyond sending virtual condolences.

3. Support for Senior Citizens – The Congress called on the government to provide palliatives for the elderly, including free healthcare and transportation, to relieve their families of economic burdens.

4. Blood Donation Campaign – In recognition of World Blood Donor Day, NAWOJ FCT encouraged members to voluntarily donate blood, while also addressing the myth that women are unfit to donate.

The Congress celebrated members who secured seats in both the NUJ FCT Council and the FCT Correspondents Chapel. It also acknowledged the resignation of Comrade Gloria Josiah as Ex-Officio, noting that the vacancy would be filled at a later date.

Members were encouraged to maintain regular contact with one another as a way to reinforce sisterhood and professional solidarity.

Chairperson Ikpang apologized for the two-month gap between Congress meetings and invited members to bring innovative ideas for the future.

“Together, we must build a stronger, safer, and more inclusive platform for women journalists in the FCT,” she said in her closing remarks.

The Congress was adjourned and is expected to reconvene in July 2025.
