The senator representing Edo Central, Joseph Ekpea Igiagbe, says the establishment of state police will play a crucial role in addressing the security challenges confronting the country.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the lawmaker also proposed that serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members should be given the first right of refusal when applying to join military or paramilitary organisations as a way of increasing the nation’s security manpower.

He maintained that every citizen has a responsibility in addressing the socioeconomic and security challenges the nation faces.

“I would like to share my thoughts on the state of the nation. Every Nigerian has a role in improving our country. Government alone cannot solve all our problems. Each of us, irrespective of belief, tradition, or background, must strive to raise our communities well—as human beings committed to doing the right thing.”

“Today, we face significant challenges, especially insecurity. Some individuals act purely out of self-interest, destabilising the country for personal gain. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that Mr. President is doing his best to tackle these issues.”

According to him, security is vital not just for peace but also for economic progress.

“By the grace of God, our economy is improving. Prices of essential commodities, which were high before this administration came in, have stabilized to some extent. For this, we must commend the President.”

He praised the Tinubu-led administration for steering the country toward what he described as the “promised land.”

“Unfortunately, some opposition elements are attempting to exploit insecurity and other national challenges to discredit the government ahead of the 2027 elections. I am confident that the measures put in place by the administration will help reduce fear and improve security. Effective security, as the President understands, is the foundation of national development.”

The senator urged citizens to reject greed and corruption in the interest of national growth.

“Greed and corruption remain major obstacles. It is up to all of us to act responsibly and ethically for the progress of our country.”

Speaking on governance and leadership, he emphasized his motivation for entering politics.

“Many people believe politics is dirty, but I joined to address the problems of the people. Since 1999, I have been involved in public service, and as a senator today, my focus is on improving the lives of my constituents. Security, education, and economic opportunities are essential pillars of this work. My people are educated and understand the challenges we face; I will always strive to serve them well.”

He highlighted the importance of accountability, recalling his time as a council chairman.

“In my previous role as council chairman—despite serving one of the poorest councils in the state—I ensured that no salaries were owed before I left office. Prudence and responsible management are principles I apply in every office I hold. Legislators create laws and frameworks for effective administration, but their success depends on responsible execution.”

On security reforms, he reaffirmed his support for regionalized policing.

“I support efforts to adopt state policing. This ensures that communities are protected by people who understand their environment and can significantly reduce insecurity. I am also working on a bill to leverage the NYSC to help young people transition into military and paramilitary service. This will reduce unemployment, create a trained pool of security personnel, and strengthen community safety.”

He concluded by emphasizing collective responsibility.

“In the end, the state of our nation depends on all of us thinking and acting rightly. Security and ethical governance are central to progress, and by working together, we can ensure that our country grows and prospers.”
