Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a UK prison and has returned to Nigeria.

Beatrice arrived in Abuja today, January 22, after serving part of her sentence in the United Kingdom. She, along with her husband and their doctor, Obinna Obeta, was convicted by a UK court in May 2023 on charges related to organ harvesting.

The case, which drew international attention, saw the court rule on March 23, 2023, that Senator Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and Dr. Obeta had conspired to traffic a young Nigerian trader to the UK for the purpose of organ harvesting, violating the UK’s Modern Slavery Act of 2015. Prosecutors argued that the trio intended to exploit the 21-year-old victim by facilitating the removal of his kidney.

The conviction marked a historic ruling under the UK Modern Slavery Act, being the first of its kind. Despite pleading health concerns during the trial, Beatrice Ekweremadu was sentenced to six years in prison, while her husband received a 10-year sentence. Dr. Obinna Obeta, the medical professional involved in the scheme, was also handed a 10-year jail term.
Noted that Senator Ekweremadu and Dr. Obeta continue to serve their sentences in the UK.
