Euracare Hospital launches probe into death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son
Euracare Hospital, Lagos, has announced the commencement of an internal investigation following allegations by renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie that negligence at the facility resulted in the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.
Nnamdi, one of Adichie’s twin sons, reportedly died on Wednesday while undergoing a medical procedure at the hospital.
The award-winning writer alleged that the anaesthesiologist involved in the procedure was criminally negligent, describing the conduct as fatally casual and careless, and held the hospital responsible for the tragic loss of her child.
Reacting in a statement issued on Saturday, Euracare Hospital expressed deep condolences to Adichie and her family, describing the incident as a profound and unimaginable loss. The hospital also noted that some accounts circulating online regarding the incident were inaccurate.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and her family on the passing of their son and acknowledge the profound and unimaginable loss they are experiencing during this deeply distressing time,” the statement read.
“The loss of a child is beyond words, and we offer our most heartfelt condolences to his parents and the entire family. We find it necessary, for the record, to clarify that some of the reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies.
“Our facility is a reputable centre for complex medical care, led by an internationally trained and experienced clinical team. The patient, who was critically ill, was referred to our facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment for a period of time at two paediatric centres.”
The hospital stated that upon the child’s arrival, its medical team provided care in line with established clinical protocols and internationally accepted medical standards, including sedation where clinically required.
Euracare further explained that it worked collaboratively with external medical teams recommended by the family and ensured that all necessary clinical support was made available throughout the child’s care.
“Despite these concerted efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at our facility. We have commenced a detailed investigation consistent with our clinical governance standards and best practices,” the statement added.
The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, patient safety, and full cooperation with all clinical and regulatory processes, while pledging continued support to the bereaved family.
“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply. Our priority remains compassion, patient safety, and the responsible handling of this matter, while respecting the family’s privacy and allowing due process to take its course,” Euracare said.
The hospital concluded by assuring the public that the ongoing investigation would strictly follow clinical governance standards and best practices as it seeks to fully address the circumstances surrounding the incident.
