The Federal Government’s efforts to promote clean, affordable transportation received a major boost as thirty-five (35) hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses were formally handed over to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG)by the NNPC
At a brief ceremony held at the NNPC Towers in Abuja on Monday, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the national gas agenda and easing transportation challenges for Nigerians.
Speaking at the event, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the handover as part of a broader commitment to transition Nigeria towards cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable fuel alternatives.
He noted that significant progress has been made in gas infrastructure, supply, distribution, and retail, positioning the country to benefit fully from its vast natural gas reserves.
“We are proud to support the Federal Government’s drive for energy transition and to help deepen the use of CNG as a viable transportation fuel,” Ojulari stated.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, highlighted the symbolic and practical significance of the buses. He said they represent more than just vehicles—they embody a commitment to economic relief, environmental sustainability, and improved social equity.
“These buses signal a future where Nigerians can commute safely, affordably, and efficiently,” he remarked, describing the development as a key component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
In his remarks, Executive Vice President, Downstream, Mr. Mumuni Dagazau, emphasized the economic value of switching to CNG, noting that it reduces dependence on petrol and diesel while generating cost savings and spurring growth in the local gas sector.
Echoing this, the Executive Vice President, Gas, Power & New Energy, assured that the CNG drive will continue to gain momentum, with committed partners ready to lead the charge.
Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, stressed that the initiative reflects a broader mission to shape a new energy future that benefits people, communities, and the environment.
Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, commended the strong support received, stating that the success of the programme has been largely driven by the consistent partnership and dedication of stakeholders.
