Federal Polytechnic Nekede Introduces Chinese Language Programme
The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Owerri, has obtained accreditation to begin the teaching of the Chinese language at the institution.
The Rector, Dr (Mrs) Basilia Nkemdilim Igbokwe, disclosed this during the 48th matriculation ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session, where more than 13,000 newly admitted students were formally welcomed into different academic programmes.
Dr Igbokwe, the ninth substantive rector of the institution, also revealed that the polytechnic has expanded its facilities with the establishment of a new campus at Abaezi in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.
She noted that the institution remains committed to delivering quality education and training and will continue to contribute significantly to the development of the nation’s human resources.
According to the rector, successive administrations have helped the polytechnic grow from offering only a few National Diploma programmes to providing a wide range of academic courses. These now include both National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across the institution’s eight schools.
“In addition to these, the institution has a very robust and well packaged part-time programme both in the evening and at weekends which helps to provide good opportunities for our students, parents and relatives whose work/business may not allow them to participate in the regular programme of our institution,” she said.
Dr Igbokwe highlighted some recent achievements of the institution to include the rehabilitation and recovery of hostels to address accommodation challenges faced by students, the rehabilitation of the ICT and JAMB centres, renovation of a 1,000-capacity hall, and the revival of the tissue paper and bottled water factories.
She also mentioned the revitalisation of institutional assets through sector partnerships and the approval by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for the Higher National Diploma programme in Pharmaceutical Technology.
The rector advised the newly matriculated students to focus on academic excellence and strive to become worthy ambassadors of the institution after graduation.
