FG declares Tuesday Public Holiday to honour Late President Buhari

The Federal Government has announced Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as public holiday in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday in London.

This is contained in a statement by the Ministry of Interior, the Honourable Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo,who announced the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government following the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The statement read in part: “In furtherance of the seven days of national mourning declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a Public Holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Tunji-Ojo described the holiday as a mark of respect for the late President’s service to the nation, his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring legacy in governance and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister added.

Meanwhile, the burial of the late President has been rescheduled for Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State. According to a post by Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late President, Buhari’s remains are expected to arrive in Katsina at noon, with funeral rites scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in his hometown.

Sources said logistical challenges in London ranging from hospital protocols to flight arrangements led to the delay in transporting his body as earlier planned.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who has been in London since Sunday, was reportedly briefed on the changes.

Earlier, President Tinubu had ordered that the national flag be flown at half-mast from Sunday, July 13, through Saturday, July 19, as a sign of national mourning.
