FRSC Intensifies Enforcement to Curb Rising Road Accidents

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will intensify enforcement and public enlightenment campaigns to address the increasing number of road accidents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The FCT Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr. Felix Theman, made this known while addressing journalists in Abuja.

He expressed concern over the widespread disregard for traffic rules and regulations by motorists, particularly commercial drivers.

Mr. Theman disclosed that the Corps has formally requested additional magistrates from the FCT Judiciary to expand the number of mobile court sessions for the prosecution of traffic offenders.
According to him, the Command has received over twenty new electric bikes from the FRSC Headquarters to strengthen its patrol operations. He added that more personnel are being deployed to boost visibility and surveillance on major highways.
The Sector Commander identified some of the grievous traffic offences in the FCT to include one-way driving, overloading, overspeeding, and the use of mobile phones while driving.
He noted that despite several engagements with transport union leaders over the establishment of illegal motor parks obstructing the free flow of traffic in parts of the six Area Councils, commercial drivers continue to convert roadsides into motor parks and passenger pick-up points.
Mr. Theman also raised concerns about the illegal operations of unregistered vehicles along routes such as Lugbe–Airport Expressway, AYA–Kubwa–Zuba Expressway, and Zuba–Gwagwalada Road, which he said have contributed to the rise in road crashes within the FCT.
He further stated that the Corps will commence enforcement of movement restrictions on trucks and articulated vehicles during peak hours to address frequent conflicts and competition for road space with smaller vehicles—an issue that often results in accidents.
The FCT FRSC boss expressed confidence that with the full implementation of these measures and strict enforcement, the number of road accidents in the territory would reduce significantly.
He appealed to road users to cooperate fully with the FRSC to ensure the safety of lives and property and to promote safer roads for socio-economic activities.
Mr. Theman assured that the Corps would continue to collaborate with stakeholders and other security agencies to enhance effective traffic management across the six Area Councils of the territory.
