Hon. Jafaaru Yakubu, Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria–China Parliamentary Friendship Relationship, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and China Harbour Engineering Company for the impressive pace of work on the Shabu–Lafia–Makurdi bypass project. He described the development as a significant milestone that demonstrates the President’s resolve to revive abandoned infrastructure as well as the company’s commitment to delivering projects on schedule.

Yakubu noted that the bypass, which had remained neglected for years, is now receiving urgent attention under President Tinubu’s leadership. According to him, the ongoing construction is already making a positive impact by easing traffic congestion, shortening travel time, and stimulating economic activities between Nasarawa and Benue States. “This clearly shows how purposeful leadership and international partnership can produce results that directly benefit the people,” he said.
The lawmaker further explained that the project has contributed to improved security along the corridor. He pointed out that the presence of construction workers, heavy equipment, and increased movement in the area has helped reduce criminal activities, thereby making the route safer for commuters, traders, and farmers. “Apart from the economic benefits, the project is also bringing a sense of security and reassurance to our communities,” Yakubu stated.
During an inspection visit, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who represented the President, reaffirmed that the bypass forms part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to modernize Nigeria’s highway network. The Federal Controller of Works, Manri Ishiaku, also praised the efficiency of China Harbour Engineering Company, describing the project as a “game-changer” for the North-Central region.
Yakubu also highlighted the value of Nigeria’s partnership with China, stressing that projects such as the Shabu–Lafia–Makurdi bypass reflect the practical benefits of bilateral cooperation. He commended President Tinubu for his determination to complete previously abandoned projects, noting that such commitment helps rebuild public trust in the government’s ability to deliver on its promises.
Residents of Nasarawa and Benue States have expressed hope that the bypass will greatly improve their daily lives. Traders believe it will make access to markets easier, farmers expect smoother transportation of their produce, and commuters anticipate less stressful journeys. Community leaders have also welcomed the project, describing it as a long-awaited development that will strengthen local economies, promote regional connectivity, and improve safety along the route.
With construction progressing faster than expected, Hon. Jafaaru Yakubu’s commendation reinforces a broader message: Nigeria can achieve world-class infrastructure when leadership is decisive, partnerships are respected, and contractors are held accountable, while also enhancing the security and wellbeing of surrounding communities.
