The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to conduct a nationwide mock presidential election as part of its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The commission explained that the simulation exercise is designed to test and reinforce its result transmission infrastructure, while also addressing technical challenges experienced in previous electoral cycles.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this in Abuja during the Citizens’ Townhall on the Electoral Act 2026. He assured Nigerians that the commission is taking deliberate measures to improve transparency, logistics, and technological efficiency in a bid to deliver what he described as the most credible election in the nation’s history.
Amupitan stated that the mock poll would function as a stress test for the commission’s systems, especially regarding the electronic transmission of results nationwide. He added that insights gained from the exercise would help fine-tune operational strategies ahead of the main elections.
INEC also revealed adjustments to the 2027 election timetable. According to the revised schedule, Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on January 16, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly elections are slated for February 6, 2027.
The commission maintained that early preparation and system testing are key to rebuilding public trust and ensuring a smooth electoral process across the country.
