A few weeks after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency on insecurity, former Senate Leader Ali Ndume has said the President’s measures are already producing positive results. Ndume gave the commendation in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja

Findings indicated that despite the rising cases of kidnappings—particularly involving students of Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, pupils of Papiri Catholic School in Niger State, and church worshippers in Kwara State—President Tinubu had rolled out decisive steps to dismantle terrorist activities.

A major step was the declaration of the security emergency and the directive to the Department of State Services (DSS) to immediately deploy fully trained forest guards to flush out terrorists and bandits hiding in the nation’s forests.

Beyond increased funding for security agencies, the President, who vowed that “there will be no more hiding places for agents of evil,” also hinted at plans to recruit additional personnel into the Nigerian Police Force and the Army.

Speaking on the deployment of forest guards, Senator Ndume said the move, combined with their training, has significantly boosted the efforts of the Nigerian Army, which has also expressed satisfaction with the development.

The former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army praised the Federal Government for improving the welfare of security personnel—especially soldiers—to enhance their morale. Although acknowledging that salaries have been doubled, he stressed that the pay still falls short compared to that of armed forces in the sub-region.

“I can see visible improvements in terms of cooperation between the Armed Forces and other security agencies. That is very commendable,” he stated.

According to him, the military has also received better equipment, including new arms, uniforms, protective helmets, boots and bulletproof vests. However, he urged the government to prioritise more critical hardware needed in the theatre of operations, such as attack helicopters, additional Armoured Personnel Carriers and gun trucks.

Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District, also commended Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum for his unwavering commitment to defeating insurgency. He noted that the governor had invested over N100 billion in supporting the Nigerian Army, Civilian JTF, Police and other security agencies.

“That has complemented the efforts of the Nigerian Army. That’s very commendable. I urge other governors in the North to emulate him,” he said.
