It’s a Taboo,Against Our Culture”: Igbo Women Fault Sponsored Death Wish Protest on Sen Kalu Over Politics

A group, Igbo Women Ambassadors, has condemned the recent protest by some women and youths from Ohafia Local Government Area against Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, describing the development as culturally inappropriate and a dangerous descent into divisive politics.

The protest, which took place yesterday, reportedly featured women and youths singing derogatory songs and expressing death wishes against the former Abia State Governor over allegations that he once described Ohafia as an “IPOB area.

Reacting to the incident, the leader of the group, Ambassador Lady Marlene Onyeocha-Okolie, said the situation calls for sober reflection and caution, stressing that Igbo women must not allow themselves to be used as political tools or instruments of division.

She emphasized that Igbo women, particularly the Umu Ada, have always been revered as custodians of peace, culture, and moral values, and should conduct themselves in ways that reflect that noble responsibility.

“Igbo women should remain dignified and not allow themselves to be used as political stooges or instruments of division,” she stated.

She noted that women occupy a central place in Igbo society as nation builders, peacekeepers, and moral compasses whose words and actions carry significant weight, especially during periods of political tension.

According to her, it is the collective responsibility of women to promote peace, dialogue, and mutual respect, irrespective of political differences.

She further stressed that a peaceful and conducive environment remains essential for sustainable development and the protection of future generations, adding that communities thrive when women choose peace but suffer when women are divided.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Igbo women globally to be voices of unity, dignity, and positive change through peace building, conflict resolution, leadership advocacy, preservation of Igbo culture, and responsible civic engagement.

Igbo Women Ambassadors also reiterated its resolve to protect the interests of women and children while fostering collaboration that strengthens communities and projects a positive image of Igbo women worldwide.
