By Ugbede James Ankpa
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, on Sunday visited security formations in Gwarzo, Shanono and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas of Kano North Senatorial District, where troops were deployed to counter recent bandits’ incursions from neighbouring states.
Following the attacks in parts of the three local government areas, security personnel comprising the Nigerian Army, Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were deployed on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau arrived in Kano at about 7:00 a.m. and proceeded directly to Lakwaya Ward in Gwarzo Local Government Area, where he met with security operatives stationed at the camp.
Accompanied by the Garrison Commander of the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Kano, Lieutenant Colonel I. Ekoh, and other senior security officials, the Deputy President of the Senate inspected a parade mounted by troops under the leadership of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander in Gwarzo, Lt. Abdullahi Sadiq.
After the inspection, Senator Barau—who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament—commended the troops for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting lives and property.
“Thank you very much for your efforts to safeguard the lives and property of our people. We appreciate Mr President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his swift response to our request. He personally communicated with the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies, including the Director-General of the DSS, which led to your deployment to this area.
“Since your arrival, you have worked tirelessly to restore peace and tranquillity to our communities. I am here to thank you for risking your lives so that our people can live in peace. On behalf of the people of Kano North Senatorial District and Kano State in general, we deeply appreciate your efforts,” he said.
The Deputy President of the Senate urged the troops to maintain momentum in the ongoing operations.
“Please go after these elements who do not want peace in our land—the bandits terrorising our people. Chase them wherever they are, flush them out of this area and beyond. We are confident you will succeed,” he added.
He also appealed to residents of the affected communities to continue supporting and cooperating with security agencies, stressing that collective effort was crucial to achieving lasting peace.
From the Lakwaya camp, Senator Barau proceeded to visit security posts in Tsaure and Faruruwa wards of Shanono Local Government Area, as well as the troops’ camp in Tsanyawa Local Government Area, where he addressed officers and men at each location.
Meanwhile, the Deputy President of the Senate held a meeting with community leaders in Faruruwa Ward, Shanono LGA, where residents expressed gratitude for the deployment of security personnel to the area.
Speaking during the meeting, an elder statesman, Alhaji Yahaya Bagobiri, appreciated the Federal Government for the security intervention, ongoing road projects, and various appointments given to indigenes of the area, including the appointment of the Chief of Staff to the Deputy President of the Senate.
A former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Farouk Lawan, also lauded Senator Barau for his consistent and decisive efforts in tackling security challenges, noting that the visit was aimed at encouraging and motivating security operatives engaged in the fight against banditry.
In his response, Senator Barau said his visit was necessitated by the recent bandits’ attacks in the area.
“May Allah protect us and prevent a recurrence of these unfortunate incidents. I am here to meet with our community leaders and residents, and also to interact directly with our gallant security personnel—to see them, listen to them, and understand the realities on the ground,” he said.
Responding to a request from the community, Senator Barau announced that arrangements had been made for the construction of a dam in the area in the near future.
Members of the entourage included the APC Secretary in Kano State, Hon. Ibrahim Zakari Sarina; Hon. Farouk Lawan; Hon. Kabiru Ado Lakwaya; Engr. Muhammad Ali Wudil; Hon. Aminu Sulaiman Goro; Hon. Garba Ya’u Gwarmai; Hon. Yusuf A. Yusuf Tabuka; Hon. Inuwa Zangina Dangada; Hon. Murtala Nyako; and Hon. Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo, among others.
