A senior lecturer at Kogi State University, Anyigba, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, has died following a private encounter with a 22-year-old female undergraduate in a hotel room.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. According to reports, Dr. Ibikunle collapsed while engaging in a sexual act with the student, identified as Gloria Samuel, a 200-level student from the Department of Social Studies Education.

It was alleged that the lecturer had consumed several energy drinks before the incident. The situation turned dire when the student, in a panic, rushed to the hotel reception to seek help. Hotel staff immediately contacted the authorities, prompting a response from the Anyigba Police Division. Dr. Ibikunle was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The Kogi State Police Command has taken over the investigation. The student has been taken into custody and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for questioning. Police spokesperson SP William Ovye Aya confirmed that an autopsy has been conducted, though the results have not yet been disclosed.

The sudden death has sparked widespread reactions across the university community, particularly given Dr. Ibikunle’s reputation as a strict academic and his status as a married man with children. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as more details emerge.
