Nigerian football legend and former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu has died at 62, drawing tributes and grief from across the country’s football community.

Former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu has died at the age of 62, sparking widespread mourning within Nigeria’s football fraternity.
Nwosu, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s victory at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, passed away early Saturday morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

He had been receiving intensive medical care at the facility since Wednesday.
News of his death was confirmed by his former teammate, Segun Odegbami, who fondly referred to Nwosu as the “Youngest Millionaire” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
Odegbami shared the announcement, saying that after spending five days in hospital fighting for his life, Nwosu died around 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where he had been on intensive care since midweek.
He added that it was with profound pain that he conveyed the passing of Nwosu, praying that the late football icon would rest peacefully with his Creator in heaven.
During his illustrious playing career, Nwosu featured for several notable clubs, including ASEC Mimosas, New Nigeria Bank FC, and African Continental Bank FC.
On the international stage, he represented Nigeria in multiple AFCON tournaments and also competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics.
Following his retirement from active football, Nwosu moved into coaching. He handled Nigeria’s U-17 national team and later managed clubs such as Ibom Stars and Gateway United.
His impact on Nigerian football remains profound, and his legacy is expected to endure for generations.
