The NERPS 2026 Conference brought together global experts, policymakers and researchers to explore how technology can strengthen multilateral cooperation in advancing peace and sustainable development.
The conference opened with a welcome address by Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, who highlighted the need for stronger collaboration among nations to address emerging global challenges.
Keynote presentations were delivered by Dr. Måns Nilsson, Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and Rumiko Seya, President of Reach Alternatives (REALs), who both emphasized the importance of innovative policy frameworks and technology-driven solutions in tackling climate and sustainability challenges.
During the conference, Prof. Anosike and members of the NiMet delegation actively participated in several parallel sessions focusing on climate action, disaster resilience, climate change mitigation, migration, sustainable agriculture, environmental sustainability, peace and security.
Other discussions at the event also addressed issues of urban resilience, equitable climate justice, transboundary resource management, and improved systems for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.
NiMet’s participation provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange with international stakeholders while strengthening partnerships in climate science, environmental monitoring and sustainable development initiatives.
The agency’s contributions to discussions on climate governance and resilience strategies further reinforced Nigeria’s growing presence in global conversations on climate action and sustainability.
