NNPC targets 12bn cubic feet daily gas production by 2030
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has unveiled its Gas Master Plan 2026, setting a target to ramp up gas production to 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company said the plan, launched at the NNPC Towers in Abuja, is designed to harness Nigeria’s vast gas resources to drive electricity generation, stimulate industrial development, create jobs, and attract foreign investment.
Speaking at the unveiling, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, said the initiative marks a shift from policy formulation to practical execution.
He explained that the launch represents more than the release of a policy document, describing it as a strategic step toward building a more integrated, commercially focused, and execution-driven gas sector aligned with Nigeria’s broader development objectives.
Ekpo noted that Nigeria is fundamentally a gas-rich country, with one of the largest proven gas reserves in Africa. He added that the country’s main challenge has not been the availability of gas, but the effective conversion of these resources into reliable supply, value-adding infrastructure, and real economic benefits.
“The Gas Master Plan squarely addresses this gap by turning potential into performance and policies into measurable outcomes for the economy and the people,” he said.
Also speaking, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the Gas Master Plan 2026 as a bold, practical, and execution-oriented roadmap aimed at unlocking Nigeria’s vast gas potential and positioning the country as a globally competitive gas hub.
Ojulari said Nigeria holds about 210 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven gas reserves, with additional upside potential of up to 600 Tcf, making it one of the world’s most significant hydrocarbon basins. He added that this potential is further reinforced by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and the Federal Government’s gas-led energy transition agenda.
