North Central Development Commission: A New Dawn for Regional Transformation
When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed into law the bill establishing the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) in February 2025, it marked the beginning of a new era for the infrastructural and socio-economic transformation of the North Central region.
That decisive action rekindled hope across the agriculturally rich, culturally diverse, and politically dynamic region, signaling the long-awaited renewal and repositioning of the zone.
For decades, the North Central region has endured the weight of insecurity, poverty, and infrastructural decay. Yet, it has remained resilient—contributing immensely to Nigeria’s political, economic, and social development.
Despite producing some of the country’s finest political and military leaders, along with notable figures in the private sector and entertainment industry, the region has continued to grapple with underdevelopment and federal neglect.
The establishment of the NCDC therefore goes beyond mere symbolism; it reflects President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to equitable growth and balanced national development under his Renewed Hope Agenda.
This resolve is evident in the appointment of competent technocrats and seasoned administrators to lead the Commission.
Notably, President Tinubu appointed Barr. Cosmas Ternenge Akighir—a respected legal practitioner, risk manager, agribusiness expert, and chartered forensic professional—as Chairman of the NCDC Board.
Barr. Akighir brings to the position over two decades of multidisciplinary experience spanning law, credit risk management, forensic investigation, agribusiness consultancy, and arbitration. With multiple advanced degrees obtained both in Nigeria and abroad, he is well equipped to drive the Commission’s mission in collaboration with other board members and the management team.
Equally strategic is the appointment of Dr. Cyril Tsenyil, former Accountant-General of Plateau State, as the Managing Director of the Commission.
Dr. Tsenyil’s extensive expertise in policy formulation, fund management, project execution, and regulatory compliance makes him well suited to champion transparency, accountability, and efficient use of resources for the benefit of the region.
His proficiency in financial analysis, reporting, and data-driven planning is expected to play a pivotal role in identifying priority areas and implementing targeted interventions that yield sustainable results.
Under the combined leadership of Barr. Akighir and Dr. Tsenyil, the Board and Management of the NCDC have begun working harmoniously to actualize the Commission’s objectives.
With the caliber of professionals on board and their proven track records, there is genuine optimism that the NCDC will transform the fortunes of the North Central region.
The zone now stands on the verge of a historic shift—from a region once defined by poverty, hunger, and infrastructural neglect to one poised for rapid growth, agricultural advancement, urban renewal, and widespread prosperity.
Already, the Federal Government is taking steps to ensure adequate funding for the Commission’s smooth takeoff. In support of this vision, the Nasarawa State Government has provided a temporary office in Lafia, where the NCDC will begin operations pending the completion of its permanent headquarters.
With these milestones achieved, the Commission is firmly on course, and the people of the North Central region can look forward to a new era of hope, progress, and sustainable development.
